There is nothing more frustrating than a clogged drain. If the kitchen sink is clogged, you won't be able to use the sink at all. Cooking supper or doing the dishes will be impossible with a plugged-up sink. If you have a clogged shower drain, it can be frustrating. If the drain is completely clogged, you won't be able to use the shower at all. If the shower is draining slowly, your feet will be covered with water, and soap scum will build up on the floor. To prevent this from happening, here are a few things you can do to avoid a situation.
Pouring grease down the kitchen sink is one of the most common problems a local plumber is called out for. Grease builds up in cold pipes and each time it hardens the opening gets a little smaller. It may seem like a hassle to drain the grease in a jar and throw it in the trash, but its worth it in the long run.
To keep hair from getting down the shower drain and clogging it up you can place a drain screen over the drain. This will catch the hair and after you shower, you can clean the screen.
Many people have garbage disposals under the sink. But when you throw the wrong stuff down there problems arise. Most food scraps will go down the disposal very nicely, but there are a few things you cannot put through it. Do not throw the following down the chute, hard seeds like a peach pit, egg shells, meat and surprisingly small seeds can block it completely.
Soft tissues and toilet paper are fine, but larger items should not get flushed. Things like paper towels, diapers, baby wipes and band-aids are examples of stuff that will back up a toilet. If it is not bio-degradable do not flush it.
Plumbing companies offer drain cleaning services. They can use an auger or even high pressure water to flush and clear everything that could potentially clog drain. When you have this service performed it will blast out anything that was blocking your drain.
You can try clearing the drain yourself but please be aware of the dangers of chemical drain cleaners. Not only are these products usually ineffective, but they can be harmful to the pipes.
You can try pouring some baking soda down the drain followed by the same amount of of vinegar and let it sit for ten or fifteen minutes. Then pour piping hot water down the drain to soften things up. This should clear things up if the clog was not too-too bad. If there is anything else plugging things up then chances are good you will have to call a plumber for help.
